Waist Circumference and Health Risks
Waist circumference is an important indicator of health because abdominal obesity is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and certain cancers [citation:4][citation:7].
According to WHO recommendations [citation:8]:
- Women: normal ≤ 80 cm, elevated risk 80–88 cm, high risk > 88 cm
- Men: normal ≤ 94 cm, elevated risk 94–102 cm, high risk > 102 cm
In addition to waist circumference, doctors use other risk indicators:
- Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR): Should be less than 0.5 [citation:2][citation:7].
- Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR): Normal is < 0.85 for women and < 1.0 for men [citation:2][citation:8].
This calculator combines all three metrics to give you a complete assessment of health risk. The waist-to-height ratio is considered more accurate than BMI for predicting risk [citation:1][citation:3].
